Compound of anjing (dog) +‎ laut (sea), calque of Dutch zeehond (seal, literally sea hound), from Middle Dutch seehont, possibly an alteration of seelhont (literally seal-hound, seal-dog), from seel (seal), from Proto-Germanic *selhaz.
